Dr. Song-You Hong is a world-class atmospheric modeling expert who has been serving as the director of KIAPS since 2014, and made a great contribution in bringing Korea to no. 5 country in atmospheric prediction by leading the independent development of ‘numerical weather prediction model’ that is optimized for Korea’s climatic environment.
Numerical weather prediction model is an important software that predicts future weather by processing massive climatic data using computer engineering, and KIAPS Integrated Model that KIAPS, led by Dr. Hong, successfully developed after over 5 years of research, will be used officially in Korea Meteorological Administration’s weather forecast starting early this year.
Meanwhile, the numerical weather algorithm that Dr. Hong developed independently during his time at the National Center for Environmental Prediction in USA and Yonsei University are still actively used in weather/climate researches and field around the world, and over 150 papers that he published have been cited for over 16,600 times.
