Achievement
Having researched only the battery for electric vehicles for 20 years, Director Kim
Myeong-hwan has developed lithium-ion batteries and succeeded in mass-producing
them for the first time in Korea, contributing greatly to the growth of Korea as a world’s
best secondary battery producing country.

Group CEO, who came across a rechargeable battery on a business trip to the UK in 1992, ordered the research and development of rechargeable battery as future business, and he took the responsibility in 1996. At the time, experts were skeptical of how they could win the Japanese enterprise dominating the global market.

The mass production line, which was established first in Cheongju in 1998, failed to secure quality, and struggled since then. In 2005, a loss of about 200 billion won led to a surge in adverse opinion in the group. However, with CEO's encouragement and his challenging spirit and tenacity, he finally could succeed in mass-production in 2009.
Currently, the battery is ranked as the world's best in terms of competitiveness such as quality and price, and LG supplies the product to 30 global car manufacturers in the world such as GM, Ford and others, as well and Hyundai and Kia. With the prospect that the size of the rechargeable battery market will become even bigger than the semiconductor market as the fourth industrial revolution and wireless communication era spread, he, who has finally succeeded in the new challenge after taking a single path over the last 20 years, attracts attention as a most successful engineer in the field.
