2017 POSCO Asia Fellow Scholarship Certificates Awarded

POSCO TJ Foundation has encouraged and presented scholarship certirficate to 28 Asian scholarship students at Seoul POSCO Center on November 20.

 

At this ceremony, Chairman Oh Jun Kwon of POSCO TJ Foundation, as well as 25 university authorities such as Principal Yong Hak Kim of Yonsei University, Principal Jong Ku Park of Sogang University, Principal Do Yeon Kim of POSTECH, Principal Hong Taek of KDI School, 14 board directors, and 50 Asian scholarship students were present.

 

‘Scholarship for Asian Students Studying in Korea’ is an ‘in-bound scholarship program’ that helps promising talents from different countries in Asia to complete master’s and doctorate degrees at graduate schools in Korea and play a pivotal role in different areas of society, such as government, universities, media, business and diplomacy, after returning to their homes.  This year, 28 students were selected as POSCO Asia Fellow, which includes 4 students from Vietnam, 3 from Indonesia, 3 from India, 3 from Thailand, 2 from China, 2 from Myanmar, 2 from Kyrgyzstan, 2 from Bangladesh, and 1 each from Malaysia, Mongolia, Bhutan, Singapore, Philippines, Iran and Jordan.

 

These students will be studying at institutions that entered into collaborative partnerships with the foundation, including Institute of International Studies at Seoul National University and graduate school of public administration, Yonsei Graduate School of International Studies, Korea University Graduate School of International Studies, Sogang University Graduate School of International Studies, Ewha Womans University Graduate School of International Studies, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies GSIAS, KDI School of Public Policy and Management, POSTECH Graduate School and the Academy of Korean Studies, and the foundation will be providing full scholarship for 2 years and 1 million won of living expenses per month.

 

Chairman Kwon stated in his speech, “in the 21st century when the ethical, religious, ideological and territorial conflicts are gradually increasing, the collective awareness and sense of responsibility to resolve conflicts and contradiction and head for brighter future among Asian entities are in urgent need for permanent prosperity and sustainable development.   Please keep your cooperative spirit to achieve joint prosperity of Asia through POSCO Asia Fellowship in your minds.”

 

Principal Yong Hak Kim of Yonsei University stated, “in the future, the education that is more widely used internationally is required more, and this timely demand asks for the vocation as the country that communicates with neighboring countries beyond our boundaries.  POSCO Asia Fellowship is our partner, and a rewarding business that leads the future of Asian students and fosters talents in Asia.”

 

This ceremony was hosted by Mr. Manav (India), who is currently studying at Yonsei University Graduate School of International Studies, in fluent Korean; Mr. 까녹건 (Thailand) in doctorate course at Ewha Womans University Graduate School of International Studies made a presentation on ‘POSCO and Opportunity, and Ms. Indriasari (Indonesia) made a presentation on ‘Resolution on the Improvement of Exchange and Cooperation between Korea-Indonesia’, which received great applause from attendees.

 

POSCO TJ Foundation is providing support to students in various aspects so they won’t experience inconvenience during their stay in Korea.

 

The foundation offers Mentor-Mentee program for new fellows to help smooth adjustment to their stay in Korea in terms of different verification documents or rent contracts, and is also running Korean cultural experience program, which includes visits to POSCO, historical sites, etc.

 

Learning Korean is a mandatory requirement, and the foundation asks students to speak basic Korean freely.  When students return to their countries, thesis presentation is held to share their academic achievements for 2 years, making their stay in Korea more worthwhile.

 

Entering its 13th year, Asia Fellow Scholarship has supported 13.6 billion won to 354 students.  Most graduates are becoming leading figures in their countries, such as professors or employees at global corporates or media companies.  Also, POSCO Asia Fellows has formed an alumni group in Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, etc.

 

Meanwhile, POSCO Asia Fellowship, which is POSCO TJ Foundation’s key business, consists of 5 businesses, including △Asia Research Grant, △Asia Regional Expert Training, △Scholarship for Asian Universities and △Literary Journal Asia, in addition to Scholarship for Asian Students in Korea.
