From this year, the scope of application has been expanded from basic sciences to applied sciences and the number of fellows has been increased from 30 to 40.
Support amount for new professors has increased significantly from KRW70mil to KRW100mil (for 2 years)
On Sept. 27th, the POSCO TJ Park Foundation awarded the research certificate to 40 Korean scientists selected for the 11th POSCO Science Fellowship at the POSCO Center in Seoul.
▲ On Sept 27th, the POSCO TJ Park Foundation awarded the research certificate to scientists selected as fellows of the 11th POSCO Science Fellowship at the POSCO Center. The ceremony was attended by 55 people, including Sunuk Kim, Chairman of POSCO TJ Park Foundation, fellows of the 11th POSCO Science Fellowship, Prof. Lee Beom-hoon (Seogang University), Chairman of the Selection Committee, Prof. Lee Yun-jin(Ewha Womans University), Prof. Roh Do-young(Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology) and Prof. Cho Chun-kyu(Hanyang University).
The POSCO Science Fellowship is a core project of the POSCO TJ Park Foundation that supports scientists who are studying basic sciences in Korea so that they have pride and research in a stable manner, thus growing into world’s leading scientists.
From this year, POSCO TJ Park Foundation expanded the scope of application to the field of applied sciences (steel, new materials, energy materials), a new driving force for Korea’s industrial technology, increased the number of fellows from 30 to 40 and also increased the support amount from KRW70mil to KRW100mil (for 2 years), thus establishing the POSCO Science Fellowship as a project that cultivates talents in the field of science and technology who will lead the future of Korea.
Given the statistically proven fact that most Nobel Prize winners received the prize in their 60s and 70s on the basis on the researches they conducted in their early 30s, the average age of scientists selected as fellows of the POSCO Science Fellowship was also around 35, raising our expectations for the role of the fellowship to cultivate young talents in the field of science.
That day, Chairman Sunuk Kim in her incentive speech said: “The fellows of the POSCO Science Fellowship have already chosen a penance instead of convenient and colorful roads. I would like to ask you to pioneer untrodden areas that you can lead even though it will be toil rather than simply pursue the trends of the scientific world.”
During one-month application period starting from Jun 1st , 492 people applied for the 11th POSCO Science Fellowship, showing 12: 1 cutthroat competition rate. By discipline, 42 people applied for mathematics, 68 for physics, 56 for chemistry, and 176 for life sciences, 31 for steel, 71 for new materials, and 48 for energy materials. By course, 169 people applied for doctoral program, 106 for postdoc program and 217 for new professors.
For the method of selecting fellows of the POSCO Science Fellowship, 21 professors, the members of the commission of recommendation, reviewed the applicants by 7 disciplines based on research plans and the research results; selected 97 applicants, which is twice the number of fellows; received evaluation opinions directly from domestic and foreign scientists; and finally selected 40 fellows through interviews by 21 members of the selection committee.
The 11th POSCO Science Fellowship, marking its 10th anniversary this year, has provided a total of KRW20.3 billion to a total of 347 fellows: 75 fellows in mathematics, 81 fellows in physics, 81 fellows in chemistry, 93 fellows in life sciences, 6 fellows in steel, 6 fellows in new material, 5 fellows in energy materials by discipline; and 91 fellows in doctoral programs, 66 fellows in postdoc program, and 190 new professors, by course.
